Mesquite  Lion
What challenges/opportunities will organizations such as
yours will face in 2010?
I'm entering my 2nd year as President of the Dallas County East
Democratic Club (DACED) and managing the continuing  explosive growth of the
club (we went from 22 members to 85 members in 2009) will be one of my
biggest challenges. Getting the word out about the DACED to the public in order to
find, reach out to, and encourage involvement of local Democrats will also be high
on my list.  All this along with being involved with the community, and contributing
in making local elections successful by continuing to register new voters.   We
will also be promoting the  organizing of Democrats in the neighboring
communities of SE Dallas CO. such as Sunnyvale and Seagoville.

-
What are the biggest needs for nonprofits going into the
new year?
I think the largest challenge for Non-Profits in 2010 will be to continue their
missions with less funds available to them. Some organizations, such as food
Banks,  will see a demand increase, while seeing their rate of donations
decrease.

- How do you think your organization and others are most
likely to make a difference in the new year?
Encouraging people to become involved with the political process. We
plan to do this by registering them to vote, then educating those new voters by
providing accurate, unbaised, and truthful information on all issues, so that they
can make smart voting decisions. And then finally, ensuring that those new
voters do go out and vote.

- What are your hopes for the Mesquite/Balch
Springs/Sunnyvale community this year?
I hope the citizens of our community will continue to elect leaders from the
Democratic Party, as they have been, that best reflects their ideals and values.

- What challenges/opportunities do you anticipate for local
businesses and the economy in 2010?
I'm thinking  the local economy will experience a much faster recovery
than that of the State or National level, with new businesses opening and
established ones experiencing renewed growth.

- What sort of growth (decline) do you anticipate in
employment and for new businesses and existing
businesses?
As a result of our ongoing economic recovery, I expect unemployment to
plateau in the 2nd Qtr of 2010, whereas local businesses should start hiring new
employees as the economic situation improves, this should give us a measurable
decline in unemployment by the 4th Qtr.

- What are the most important things local businesses will
need to do to succeed in the new year?
I think the most important things our local businesses can do is:  create
an atmosphere that encourages spending by consumers, increase local
investment, avoid outsourcing, and to hire locally.

- What are your hopes for the business  community in the
coming year?
I would like to hope that our local business community will get behind and
support the government's Healthcare Reform efforts.

- What are your main crime/public safety concerns for the
community – even individual residents – going into the new
year?
The Concern that our Youth and Young Adults are not utilizing provided
opportunities in the community. Either through gainful employment or enriching
local endeavors that would  give them purposeful or rewarding experiences that
instill pride and sense of accomplishment.  Going without  such opportunities
contributes to criminal activity that threatens the safety and well-being of our
citizens.

- What sort of growth (decline) do you anticipate in crime in
this year?
I would think that the local crime-rate will remain unchanged through the
first half of 2010 and then as the unemployment rate declines, the crime-rate will
decline in the 2nd half of the year.

- What are the most important things residents can do to
help ensure the safety of their homes and families in the
coming year?
Using common sense may be the best answer to this one. Being aware,
speaking up, safely securing you family, home, vehicles, possessions are a few
of the easiest and most effective tasks people can do to safeguard what matters
most to them.

- How do you think life will be better (or worse) in the
Mesquite/Balch Springs/Sunnyvale area in 2010?
I believe life will be better in the new year. with new opportunities
presenting themselves and new ideas from our citizens continuing to make our
community a great place to work and live.

- What are your New Year’s resolutions as a mother (or
father), columnist, community volunteer?
I have not thought about making a Resolution list for this year.

- What specifically are your hopes for your family and
community in the coming year?
I hope for Good health, a safe life, and success over all challenges we may
undertake.
