April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

As a member of the National Exchange Club, I am proud of the fact that my local
chapter,as well as all the Exchange Clubs here in the United States, have collectively
committed to one project, the Prevention of Child Abuse. This mission was adopted
by the Exchange club in 1978, and since April is National Child Abuse Prevention
month; I want to write some about the problem of abuse and neglect against kids.

Child Abuse is easy enough to understand, there is little doubt of what it is or why it is
wrong. Every day across America, thousands of children suffer from abuse, either
physically, emotionally, or by neglect. Many die from this abuse.

Prevention is seen as the best defense against this problem. Stopping it before it
starts or ending it before severe or fatal actions can be set upon the child or children.

'Prevention' is the key word here. Prevention is working as individuals or together, as
families or communities, in taking action in ending cruelty to children.  To give kids
someone to turn to when they need help, to create and support an environment in
which they can feel and be safe. We must also overcome reluctance  to become
involved when we  see child abuse occurring.

Bringing awareness and education can go a long way in preventing child abuse. We
need to be made aware of what children are. Children are our future, they are the
future adults who will grow up to have their own families. They  will  become
contributing members of our nation's workforce, they will be tomorrow's leaders,
and they will help provide a comfortable life for their parents in old age.

Now I know all this may be a hopeful vision, But if children are not given the
opportunity to even stand a chance to do any of those, what will become of them, and
us?

By valuing our kids, we can ensure  their safety, and safe children can grow, learn,
and thrive. By educating  parents, and bringing awareness to them about the evils of
abuse and neglect, we can do just that. By educating children, thru love and
understanding, that abuse is wrong and that they are not responsible for what is
done to them, and  that it is all right to tell other adults about what is happening to
them. We can provide them with the opportunity to live to their full potential.

I hope that I have planted within your mind a seed of thought, that will grow in a tree of
action. An action which will protect the lives of children everywhere.
