This annual event regularly attracts hundreds of Mesquite residents together in
seeking a cure for cancer and to honor the survivors of the disease, and this year will
be no different.
Anticipation for this year's event has been building since the official kick-off back on
January 13th, but there is still plenty of time for more people and Teams to join in.
Relay For Life is American Cancer Society's national signature activity. It is an
overnight run/walk event where Teams of raise money to fund the ACS efforts to
eliminate cancer as a major health problem. Team members take turns on a track for
20 minutes to an hour at a time, always keeping at least one person from their team
on the track throughout the relay. Each team member is also asked to raise a
minimum of $100 in donations to contribute to the fundraising event.
The Relay will be held on Friday, May 13th at the Judge Frank Berry Middle School
Stadium, 3300 E. Cartwright Rd. in Mesquite.
So far, this year's Relay has 15 teams and 56 participates involved. These numbers
are expected to increase as the event gets closer.
Until the day of Relay arrives, there will be several events leading up to it, they include
an all-u-can eat pancake fundraiser at the Applebees in Mesquite ( 19035 LBJ FWY,
near Kohl's) this coming Saturday on February 12th 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
A Survivor Breakfast is to be held in honor of survivors of Cancer, that will be held
March 12th 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM in the fellowship hall of Minosa Lane Baptist Church

You have no idea how many people do not have any of the types of ID they have listed,
Some do have a drivers License or ID but it is expired several years over, for
whatever reason some are just laziness, for some it cost money, others they have
warrants for minor traffic violations or suspensions that prevent them from showing
up to renew it, we deal with it all day long. A overdue traffic ticket should not take
away your right to vote.

Yes, I pulled it up and read the whole thing , it wasn't too long, but what is interesting
if you pull up her page of bills she has authored/co-authored, they are all about voter
ID and restricting womens rights, nothing in there about keeping our money in our
schools or creating jobs

"No, my neighbors kids will continue to go to public schools, we will have to stop
paying the union and get better teachers. And my neighbors mom?" I don't know
what world you live in where getting rid of Unions is ever going to produce better
teachers, more likely the opposite. I am an optimist so I am inclined to agree with you
that your neighbor children will probably continue going to public schools, only
because I have faith in the Mesquite Independent School District to not let any of our
schools close, however other local districts won't be so lucky. What you can count
on is the quality of the education our kids will be getting in our schools to take a huge
hit,, MISD'S efficiency is gong to be its downfall I'm afraid. We already run them on a
bare bones budget. I have 3 kids I have raised in Mesquite Schools 2 of which are still
in school., did you know that Kids in our Middle Schools no longer are issued Text
Books? When I ask why , because they can't afford to give them to all the kids, and
that is now before any cuts will have to be made,, what will they cut next? We know
honor student programs will be one for sure, and you can count on Early Childhood
services being on the chopping block as well. So sure MISD will survive because we
are survivors, but its our kids that will be paying for this one, you can expect the
percentage of kids graduating college ready , which is already extremely low, to drop
in large numbers, ask any of the admissions people at our community colleges they
will tell you about 3/4 of the kids are taking 3 to 4 prep classes before they are even
ready for college level You can count on that number going up as well as the number
of kids actually being able to attend community college to drastically decline. I'm sure
these are small things to you , but they are big things to us that still have kids in the
school system. And the Mom at home comment, that is not worth my time arguing the
point, Most of us don't live in the perfect world it seems you do because most Mom's I
know even if they wanted to go back 50 years to the days Mom belongs in the home.
- Staying at home was never an option."

No Sir, if by making my point you mean that the Republicans are on a mission to
make sure low income and middle class families stay that way, and that Republicans
are determined to keep Texas in last place in kids graduating high school and going
to college, Yes I believe I made my point. But then again I have no doubt that is the
plan, I mean without an education the chances of them pulling themselves up is
pretty slim isn't it. Sure some get lucky but this way no doubt you can insure that the
rich will keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer, all the while eliminating
the middle class.

This is the Republican answer to the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child
supposedly its supposed to leave parenting to the parents, and "protect" them from
Federal interference, but the way the bill is loosely written it would make children be
treated more like property and give to much of a shelter to abusive parents, Its an
unnecessary action, and from everything I've read, not likely to pass in congress.

Tomorrow our club will be holding its monthly General membership meeting for the
month of February.
Our Speaker will be Judge Martin Hoffman, He will be speaking on the 4M
Foreclosure Fairness Program which combats the foreclosure crisis facing Texans.
It is a 4 step program which Judge Hoffman created, to give homeowners a voice. I
look forward to hearing him speak on this innovative program.
Since we last gathered at Martinez, the people of the world and of our own nation
have been expressing themselves through voice & action. From the Middle East to
Wisconsin to our own State & County Government. There will be much to talk about
when we see each other.
On March 13th we held the first of series of Workshops our club will be putting on.
This first one dealt with communicating with our local elected officials and media;
Focusing on letter-writing and e-mail. Future workshops will focus on legislative
issues, and watching the progression of Legislation and keeping elected officials
accountable. I'll keep all of you informed when the next workshop will be held.
Our club's ACS Relay for Life team 'Team Miklos', is coming along very well. There is
still plenty of time left before the night of Relay in May, in order to join the team and to
do fundraising. On March 12th Our Team will be holding a Bake Sale fundraiser, we
are asking all clubmembers to please donate something towards this, maybe a Cake
or fudge mix, or cookies or cupcake holders. Anything would be appreciated.
I look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow evening.

I want to say Thank you to Keep Mesquite Beautiful for Honoring me with the KMB
2010 Volunteer of the Year award, it means alot to me.

organization.
February 26, 2011
Very true, this rally was actually organized by A libertarian group. You like many,
make the mistake of thinking that just because I don't think it is my job to judge
someone else for a choice they make about their body means I want babies killed. I'm
not "pro-abortion" I am however "pro-choice". The belief that being pro-choice
means you want people to have abortions is false. I don't wish that on anyone, I think
there are very real instances where that personal choice is probably the best one for
some women. Not a choice I would make for myself, but I can't make decisions for
other women about what is right or wrong for themselves.
February 26, 2011
If you took anything I said as an insult please re-read, because I wouldn't do that. I
respect your beliefs. And I am glad your mother made that very hard choice to carry
you and had the strength to give you up. I have the utmost respect for your birth
mother. But, I have no less respect for a women who had to make a hard choice to
end a pregnancy, it isn't always as black and white as the pregnancy was bad timing.
But I respect your beliefs even if I may disagree. But I do want you to know , not every
woman who doesn't hate women that have made those choices is a baby killer.
February 26, 2011
Of course I support that service, ( Pregnancy Resource Center) I think services like
that as well as the services Planned Parenthood provides on a daily basis are
necessary.
