Toxic Political Rhetoric that makes use of violent terms and phrases is dangerous.
Politicians encourage us to make up our own minds and think for ourselves. But now
they are telling us to make exceptions, saying that they didn't mean for anyone take
what they said literally or that their words have been twisted.
If you have to come out with an explanation about what you said, you probably
shouldn't have said it to begin with. If you mean that we should remove elected
officials from office with our votes, don't stand in front of thousands of people at
rallies or go on the News and speak about Second Amendment remedies, violent
overthrow of the government, or taking people out.
If you say what you mean to begin with, then you don't have to worry about being
called out on it. If you want to get someone voted out of office, then say 'Let us vote
them out.'
This great nation belongs to us all, it is not yours or mine or theirs, it is ours. Theirs
no 'Time to take our country back' or 'Take our government back' -- Back from
whom? As far as I know, America is still run by Americans. There is no need ever to
make maps with gunsight crosshairs on them, or effigies of our nation's leaders as
Hitler and Nazis because someone is of a different political persuasion than what you
are.
If politicians and their supporters don't really mean these violent and hateful things,
then why make use of them?

The Press Conference was put on by Organizing for America in support of the
Affordable Care Act. OFA and attending Dallas Area residents, such as myself, are
not in favor of it's Repeal. The Press conference was held in a park across the street
from Children's medical center. There were about 20 people in attendance despite
the cold. The ACA is a good law. It will help the citizens of our country by removing the
huge cost burdens that now exists with health insurance.

I think the race to succeed Sen. Hutchison is going to be a very competitive affair with
alot of the worst the aspects to come from the back-and-forth between the GOP and
Tea Party. Already several Republican names have been mentioned in the media,
such as Dewhurst, Barton, and Leppert. While on the Democratic side John Sharp
and Bill White may be potential successors, with Sharp being in the better of the two
positions, having run for Senate last year and White's Defeat in the Governor's race.
The economy and Job Creation will the the two biggest issues that all the candidates
will have to deal with. Whoever is perceived to be best suited to deliver on those two
subjects will get the votes.

Sanctuary cities is a concept that comes from a certain point of view, it is a label
meant to shame. I think that any city that does not have a strong active policy that
bans people who have entered the U.S. illegally from living and working in their
community, and seeks to remove them and return them to their nation of origin could
be called a sanctuary city. That would include Dallas,Garland, and even Mesquite.
But isn't illegal immigration ultimately a Federal matter? or at the very least a State
one? If a municipal government believes that the issue is something that Washington
or Austin should be in charge of, why should they be labeled a Sanctuary city?
Cities that do try and do something about the problem of illegal immigration, find that
it diverts law enforcement resources, are accused of racial profiling, has to spend
money that could be put to better use. Garland tries one method of managing illegal
workers by having a day labor facility available to them, everybody sees it, so I'm sure
law enforcement can find them in that situation if they wanted to.
One of the Best ideas I know of that discourages illegal workers, and thus illegal
residents, is to require Employers to verify the identification of all their employees,
and allowing federal inspectors to periodically Double-check their validity. So, if they
can't work, they're not going to be in your community, and you won't be called a
sanctuary city.
Bottom line, Immigration control, legal and illegal, is a federal issue.
Cities should not have to take on this responsibility.

Attempting to Repeal the Affordable Care Act is not a starting point which the new
Congress can realistically think will help our nation solve her problems. The
Economy, Jobs, infrastructure, education and so many other more important issues
need to be dealt with, other than trying to take away this good law that benefits
millions of our fellow citizens. People need to inform their representatives that this
is not the path to take.

If they are Tone Deaf, than maybe we should speak louder. If they are deaf then we
should communicate in sign language. They need to respond to what the citizens of
Texas require to improve their situation. Not to the extreme Right or to special
interest groups.
January 24, 2011
With all the challenges that currently faces our State and it's citizens, which includes
the state Budget, education funding, the urgent need to create Jobs, and the health of
the Texas economy in general, I think that the legislature's take of what issues
should be worked on first is off the mark. Voter ID is something that can wait.
January 25, 2011
ID requirements create long lines and confusion at the polls. I can tell you from
personal experience, having worked the polls on Election Day(2008 especially), that
getting people checked in on the voter rolls and getting them ballots take...s time.
There are never enough volunteers to help . If we had been required to check IDs and
verify an address with the voter registration and the address on the DL, it would have
lengthened lines and caused legitimate voters to either turn around, or have to wait a
long time. Now for me personally, I’ll wait in line however long it takes. But
unfortunately, many voters aren't like that they would just turn around.
Also working in law enforcement you see this alot, but you would be shocked to know
how many people don't update their address on their Drivers License , its just not a
priority to most people, If they show up at the polls and have a current voter
registration with the correct address but their license says something different I see
this causing huge problems.
Unfortunately I think this is one of those "consequences " of the election things, its
not if Voter ID passes its now in what form is it going to pass, an article that came out
yesterday said the new version is even more complex than the version in 2009, it
seems lawmakers are bound and determined to make it harder to vote. They should
be really careful though because they may find themselves cutting off their nose to
spite their face if as it has been said this new version all but illuminates the mail in
ballot, because here in 101 the HD race would have turned out differently had her mail
in ballots not counted.

Today we will be holding our first meeting of 2011.
It will be great to see all the clubmembers together for the new Year, I hope all of you
had a great Holiday season, and have started off 2011 refreshed.
Last night, we heard our President give the annual State of the Union speech. I
thought he gave a very good address, and I'm sure many of you are interested in
knowing what your fellow clubmembers thinks of his speech.
This evening will be having a presentation on the City of Mesquite transit initiative
(light-rail) given by Mesquite Asst. City Mgr. Jerry Dittman. We will also be voting on
a Club Parliamentarian.
With the new Year, comes time to renew club membership. Dues are a minimum
$12.00/Yr (suggested $20.00)
We are still building up our ACS Relay For Life team. If you are interested in
participating on Team Miklos, please speak with Shannon or Susie.
See you this evening, bring a friend, we'll have a great start for 2011.

If you have been paying attention to the out right battle in our Texas legislature the
past two years , you know this bill can be described as nothing less than an outright
attack on the minority voter. With the much talked about voter ID bill passing The
Senate and all but inevitably in the Texas House there is great cause for all of us to
stop and think of the ramifications this will have on the minority voter. Its not just
political rhetoric ,it wasn’t just a scare tactic to get people to sit up and pay attention,
its reality.
Of course we all want fair elections, and perhaps if there was even ONE case of in
person voter fraud we may all be a little more apt to give this effort by republicans
more credence, but the facts show different. The facts show never in history has
there been one proven case of successful voter fraud. Sure you have the people that
are saying that their grandmother or great dead aunt that passed away 5 years ago
still show on the voter rolls, but being on the rolls doesn’t mean you voted.
The approved types of ID have been narrowed to A VALID driver’s license, TEXAS ID
card, military ID, passport, and added just yesterday, a concealed handgun license.
Republicans predictably struck down attempts from Democratic lawmakers to
include a school issued photo student ID to the list. Statistics show overwhelmingly
younger voters are more likely to vote democratically. But even more alarming than
losing young voters, and far more apt to effect an elections outcome, is the likely loss
of African American voters. 84% of African American voters identify themselves as
democratic voters.
A recent study from the Brennan Center showed 25% of black voters don’t have the
acceptable ID forms designated in the Texas Legislature, in comparison to only
eight percent of white voters. But I’m sure that’s mere coincidence right? NO its not
these steps are deliberate steps by the far right to by any means possible hold down
the minority vote. Don’t be fooled into thinking they don’t know this bill will tip scales
in their favor. Its intentional, its methodical , and its working.
So what do we do now? I think the answer is obvious, voter education is more
important than ever before. We have to reach out to all those new voters that came in
with the election of President Obama in 2008 and make sure not only that they come
back , but that when they come back out to vote they won’t be turned away at the
polls. And that doesn’t start 2 months from the election, it starts today.
January 27, 2011
The Voter ID law is a bad deal. Every American citizen has the right to vote
guaranteed to them by our Constitution. If only one person is denied their Right to
vote, not 33% or 10% or even 1%, then voter ID should not be a state law of Texas. And
don't go off in different directions about citizenship, voter fraud, Dead people voting,
and wot not. We're talking about denying people their Right to vote simply because
they when they walk into the Poll they don't have a valid government-issued ID that
has their picture on it. Meanwhile those who cannot make it to the poll can mail-in
their Ballot without showing that ID. Or how about if I or you were to have lost our
wallet with our ID in it day before early-voting starts, would we get a chance to vote by
Election day? I think that voter ID has a constitutional problem, that it will be
challenged in court. And I also think that when the citizens of Texas start realizing the
implications that Voter ID has on their right to vote, it will be amended heavily if not
completely thrown out.

TX State Rep. Cindy Burkett HD 101 is one of 6 Co-authors of Texas HB 816
The Bill reads in part….Sec. 1671.002. PROHIBITED COVERAGE THROUGH HEALTH
BENEFIT EXCHANGE. (a) A qualified health plan offered through a health benefit
exchange may not provide coverage for an abortion other than coverage for an
abortion performed when a condition exists, based on the performing physician's
good faith clinical judgment, that complicates the medical condition of the pregnant
woman and necessitates the abortion of her pregnancy to avert her death…. (Thank
you R.W. for the Research)
There are more pressing matters that face the State of Texas right now. She needs
to be working on our State's economy, Job Creation & Retention , and protecting the
funding for Education. She should also show support for the Affordable Care Act
February 2, 2011
State Rep. Burkett HD 101 is one of 22 Co-authors of HJR 56
This Joint Resolution, proposing a constitutional amendment to restrict the power of
the legislature to mandate requirements upon certain local governments. Reads in
Part.... Sec. 68. (a) No bill enacted by the legislature on or after January 1, 2012
requiring a local government to establish, expand, or modify a duty or activity that
requires the expenditure of revenue by the local government shall be effective until
and unless the legislature appropriates or otherwise provides for the payment or
reimbursement, from a source other than the revenue of the local government, or the
costs incurred for the biennium by the local government in complying with the
requirement…. (Once again, thank you R.W. for your Research.)
We all need to keep up with what our Legislature and our State Reps are doing during
the session. They should be working on finding solutions to issues that faces our
state, such as the urgent need to grow the economy, creation & retention of Jobs,
and protecting funding for Mental health Assistance. Getting sidetracked on issues
that do not improve the current situation faced by Texans is not what is needed
right now.

The Senate voted yesterday against the repeal of the Healthcare Law with a vote of
47-51, with all democrats voting against repeal.
You would expect this vote to send the tea party blogosphere into a frenzy because
they did not’t win and the democratic blogosphere into celebration right? Wrong. Tea
Party leaders saw this vote as expected. So why is the Tea Party not just devastated
that the centerpoint of their 2008 elections was just knocked down? Because its
part of their plan, they say. A plan orchestrated by Dick Armey to slowly chip away at
the healthcare law. According to Dick he has a calculated plan that will play out
between now and 2014, when they think they will not only have a republican
President in office but a republican run house and a closer margin, if not completely
republican run, senate. Que sunshine and butterflies here.
Could this happen? Could the world as seen by Dick Armey, be reality by 2014? Well if
you follow politics enough you know , nothing is impossible and his layout certainly
isn’t beyond the realm of possibility He would have to bank on democrats not gaining
less than 25 seats in the house over the next 2 elections. In 2006 and 2008
democrats gained 30 and 25 seats respectively. Redistricting alone will more than
likely have democrats gaining 5 seats starting out in 2012, so in fact democrats
would have to gain less than 20 seats in the house by 2014. Then they would have to
hope democrats make no gains in the senate or best case scenario they lose 2 to 3
seats. Which is all still possible in a normal election year.
The fatal flaw in this grand plan , is a mistake the Tea Party and Dick Armey have
made repeatedly from the 2008 elections to now. They under estimate Barack
Obama.
Their sunshine and rainbows begin to fade when President Obama is elected to his
second term as President. With the voting numbers he is sure to bring out with his re
election it is possible democrats could regain the other 20 seats left to gain after
redistricting and take back control of the house, and most likely keep the senate, at
which point Armey’s plan falls completely apart. Once again proving it is never a safe
bet, when you are betting that Barack Obama will fail.
